Weight Loss Injectables: Supplement With A Healthy Diet

What is Semaglutide and Tirzepatide?

Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are both FDA approved for their use in type 2 diabetes and weight loss. They are synthetic versions of a naturally made hormone in the body that is known as GLP-1. It is released when food is consumed to let your brain know you are full leading to decreased intake of food and subsequent weight loss. While these drugs are helpful in weight loss, having a healthy diet is important for success with taking this medication. Side effects are minimal, but can occur when taking Semaglutide and Tirzepatide. Some common side effects include: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, and constipation. To help avoid these side effects, it’s important to maintain a healthy diet.

Incorporating Proteins Into Your Diet

Proteins can make you feel fuller longer, control appetite, and support weight management efforts. It can boost metabolism by causing the body to consume more calories and therefore burn more energy. A high-protein diet can help you lose body fat, without losing muscle. Common sources of protein include: turkey, fish, beef, chicken, chickpeas or lentils, eggs, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, nuts, and more. On average, a daily goal of 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight or about 10%-35% of calories consumed in a day is recommended. That’s about 68-82 grams of protein per day, split between three meals. As you become more active your protein intake will need to be increased to meet your bodies demand.

Incorporating Fibers Into Your Diet

High fiber foods aids in gut bacteria health and lower blood sugar, while promoting overall fat loss by reducing appetite. Additionally, fiber-rich foods absorb more water and swell in the digestive tract allowing for a more complete passage of stool and less constipation. It is important to consume 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day. This fiber intake should be coming from food sources instead of supplements. Common sources of fiber include: fruits (like pears, berries, apples), vegetables (like carrots, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale), legumes (chickpeas, lentils, edamame), nuts & seeds (almonds, chia seeds, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds).

Incorporating Anti-Inflammatory Foods Into Your Diet

Chronic inflammation has been associated with obesity. When intaking foods that combat this inflammation, gut health increases, stress is reduced, and a healthy body weight is maintained. While anti-inflammatory foods may not help decrease weight alone, combined with protein, fiber, and a healthy lifestyle, they can aid in keeping the immune system healthy and protect against developing diseases. Common sources of anti-inflammatory foods include: vegetables, berries, healthy fats, fatty fish, nuts, and spices. It is important to avoid foods that cause inflammation. Foods that include added or high sugar, processed foods, refined carbs, alcohol, and trans fats. It is important to consume anywhere between 8,000-11,000 antioxidant units per day.
