Not All Redness Is Rosacea: How Lumecca Can Clear Up the Confusion (and Your Skin)

Your redness might not be rosacea—and the right treatment depends on what’s really happening.

There are multiple skin conditions that can cause redness on your skin which can lead to misdiagnosis of rosacea. Some facial redness causes include dermatologic conditions, skin irritation, allergic reactions, or other medical conditions including lupus. Rosacea is an inflammatory condition that causes persistent redness on the rounder areas of the face including cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead.

Flushing vs. Rosacea

While flushing can occur with rosacea, actual face flushing is temporary and can disappear within a few hours or less. With rosacea, flushing stays longer along with a myriad of other signs including warm touch to the skin, acne-like breakouts, visible blood vessels, skin thickening, or dry and itchy skin.

Broken Capillaries vs. Rosacea

Rosacea can cause broken capillaries but broken capillaries alone does not necessarily mean rosacea. Broken capillaries, or spider veins, can appear on those with thinner and dry, sensitive skin. It can occur anywhere on the face, but in rosacea visible blood vessels are more often seen around the nose and cheeks. The visible blood vessels from rosacea are also typically secondary to the rosacea itself, occurring after the redness has already been persisting.

Inflammation vs. Rosacea

Rosacea is considered an inflammatory skin condition, but inflammation can occur for multiple reasons – not just rosacea. Inflammation is the result of the body’s natural response to injury, infection, or other danger. This body reaction which combines a lot of factors at once can trigger the face to swell and flush. Common causes are allergies, environmental irritants and diet.

How can I treat my redness?

Lumecca IPL can help treat broken capillaries and rosacea. Lumecca IPL is a pulsed light therapy that targets melanin and blood vessels that helps with multiple conditions by breaking down pigmentation including redness. It also stimulates collagen production, leading to clearer and smoother skin. Treatment sessions can be fairly short at 60 minutes or less, and most people can see effects within 1-3 sessions.

  • For regular facial flushing, you can try over-the-counter products with ingredients such as niacinamide which works to rebuild keratin, build up the skin barrier and boost hydration –ultimately reducing redness.

  • For general skin protection and prevention, it is important to use SPF daily to protect from UV rays which overexposure can lead to redness, irritation, and uneven skin texture. Also it is important to stay hydrated as it flushes toxins and triggers out of the system, replenishes the skin and keeps it elasticity.

Ideally, it's important to speak to your provider or a dermatologist to help diagnose and determine what treatments will work best for you. Core Aesthetic also provides consultations to further cater a treatment plan that is perfect for you to achieve your aesthetic and health goals.
